you say:   The Battle of Kapyong with Australian infantry and American armour defeated the Chinese ...

You did your reasearch and you did not like what you found.
While the Chinese were attacking the Australians the Canadians were reenforcing with extra machine guns, ammo and troops they knew they were next. The Canadians repelled the Chinese with ease

you say:  unified Korea against external threats,

The only external threat against an United Korea is uncle sam.
Would you know about another threat

When unified, Korea will be connected to Eurasia through a land route and will benefit from China's One Belt One Road.
China will never attack another Country unless in self defense.
Uncle sam likes to test his nuclear and MOAB devices in foreign Countries

You don't seem to fully understand that in my plan there would be no DPRK, and united Korea would be ROK. China would only provide military presence to the northern part of Korea, so US allied ROK troops would not need to do it.

United Korea would be under Seoul's jurisdiction, and Washington and Seoul are not threats to each other. China's military presence in northern Korea would be providing imaginary protection to Korea, while mainly safeguarding China's own interest of not having US troops any closer.

But considering what real or imaginary threats Korean or Chinese citizens could have in addiition to USA,
apparently at least China's official agenda is that Japan should not abandon their pacifist constitution, and if Japan were to start building battleships again, it would be very big threat to regional stability.

So upon your request, I would name Japan as an external threat to united Korea  - in my opinion it is not a threat, but I would understand if some people in East Asia consider it such).

And of course one can not completely ignore Russia, should they suddenly become interested in their far east in some similar fashion they did in Ukraine or Crimea.
